Lake Erie power line plan moves ahead

The line, expected to cost $1 billion, is designed to carry up to 1,000 megawatts, enough electricity to power more than 800,000 homes.

Another hurdle has been cleared for the construction of the ITC Lake Erie Connector, a 73-mile power electric transmission line that would connect Ontario with Penelec’s West substation in Conneaut Township.

The line, expected to cost $1 billion, is designed to carry up to 1,000 megawatts, enough electricity to power more than 800,000 homes.

The latest regulatory hurdle was cleared this week when Canada’s Governor in Council approved issuing a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the transmission line, most of which would be buried under Lake Erie.

A statement from ITC suggests most regulatory issues have been resolved and that the project, which would create the first direct connection between Canada IESO and U.S. PJM electricity markets, is moving closer to the construction phase.

In addition to an initial recommendation from the National Energy Board, the project has received permits from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection as well as a national pollution discharge elimination system permit.
