Orange cloud coming from Suncor Energy plant after power failure

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Several people called emergency dispatch after seeing an orange cloud coming from the Suncor Energy plant on Friday afternoon.

Suncor Energy says the orange cloud was the result of a power failure.

“At approximately noon today our Commerce City Refinery experienced a power failure which resulted in an operational upset. As a result of this upset a visible emission can be seen coming from the Refinery,” the company said.

The company says its working to stablize the plant and monitoring air quality in the area.

The South Adams County Fire Department was dispatched to the plant at 5801 Brighton Blvd. to determine what was causing the smoke. The battalion chief earlier asked people in the area to shelter in place.

The Denver Fire Department responded with a full hazardous materials unit to help with the Adams County hazardous materials team.
